Glee Live! In Concert

Perky to the maximum, the TV phenomenon Glee shed its plotlines and flaunted its young troupers’ gusto and its karaoke repertory for Happiness Live! In Concert on Fri. night, beginning a sold-out three-night stand at Radio Town Music Hall that completes a four-city tour.

The Fox TV series is sort of a John Hughes movie turned into a jukebox musical. It follows the long odds and little victories of New Directions, a long shot Glee club full of ethnically and sexually various high-school misfits. They sing and dance thru pop hits that, like greetings cards, say succinctly what the characters are feeling.

In the meantime, they bond as a group and learn how to stay happy with being different, a message repeated weekly. Some Happiness cast members are absolutely developed vocalists, some not. Ms. Michele is a talented, high-voiced belter; Chris Colfer, who plays the gay, fashion-loving Kurt, has a similarly high and pure voice which has been underused on the program.

Their duet on Defying Gravity from Cruel which promises to trust my instincts was the best matchup in the set. Cory Monteith, who plays the quarterback and drummer Finn, has a keen but thin voice. Mark Salling, as the bad boy with the Mohawk hair cut nick-named Puck, exercised an able baritone, as did Kevin McHale, who plays the wheelchair-bound Artie.

The Estey organ and piano became a dominate name for antique pianos. Jacob Estey was born on a farm in Hinsdale, NH, 1814. He had to leave his home at four years of age to work on a neighboring farm where he had to stay until he was thirteen years old when he ran away to Worcester, Mass. He apprenticed to a plumber and traveled with his work. He ended up in Brattleboro, VT., in 1834, making this a famous town for the organs he made there. He continued plumbing, but in his building on Main Street, he rented the second floor to a melodeon maker named Greene. Estey invested heavily in the melodeon business only to lose almost everything by fire. Estey did not give up and within a year began building parlor organs. Fuller became his engineer. Superior quality became their goal. In 1885 the Estey Piano Company was organized in New York City. Both pianos and organs received superior awards for construction and workmanship. Estey died in 1890. His son became owner and manager. Then later, his sons inherited the Estey Piano Company with the reputation for high class products. The grand and upright pianos became a dominant factor in the piano trade.

Another prominent antique piano manufacturer was Henry Behning. He was born in Hanover, Germany in 1832. There he learned piano making with Julius Gercke and came to America in 1855. He worked with Lighte and Newton until at the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted with the Union Army. He became disabled, leaving the army, and in then he started making a good commercial piano. In 1880 his son joined the partnership. In 1894 the firm became the Behning Piano Company with Henry Jr., and Gustav Behning managing the business.

One more important manufacturer was Emmos Hamlin, while working at the melodeon factory of Geo. A. Prince in Buffalo, made the important discovery of “voicing” organ reeds to imitate other instruments. He developed this discovery to perfection and in 1854 and formed the Mason and Hamlin partnership which led to manufacture of the some superior pianos. Hamlin was a painstaking, exact working mechanic, with considerable genius as an inventor. Henry Mason had the best musical traditions of Boston and was imbued with that artistic devotion to music, which is found in the almost flawless instruments produced by Mason and Hamlin. From 1881 the manufacture of antique pianos for Mason and Hamlin is an artistic instrument of the highest order.

The invention of the resonator is used in all the grand pianos of Mason and Hamlin.
