Urologist Ramon Niekrash recognised this when he blew the whistle against some new measures introduced in the London hospital where he was working. In an interview with the daily, The Independent he said doctors should think twice before arguing with the management over the implementation of cost-cutting measures since it might cost them their career with even the law remaining silent on the issue. He added that NHS bosses give priority to money and profit targets over patient care.

Dr. Niekrash was suspended by his hospital following which he took the case to the courts. The embittered doctor won the case in February this year after the Employment Tribunal ruled in his favour, accepting that he was victimised by the management for his opposition on policy issues.

Welcoming the decision, Dr. Niekrash’s lawyer, Arpita Dutt from Russell Jones & Walker Solicitors, pointed out that this case is merely an indication of what happens to someone who raises concerns about patients’ healthcare. She said employees are often scared of voicing such concerns, as they fear losing their jobs. Dutt believes it is important to ensure the safety of patients, therefore necessary that whistleblowers such as Dr. Niekrash are not silenced. She added that the freedom of expression of people like him becomes all the more important in the light of prospective budget cuts.
